The fact that the remarkable women being recognized as moms were also activists who battled for the peace, health, and welfare of children may surprise you.

Mother's Day's History

There has been a Mother's Day celebration for as long as there have been moms. Ancient mother-honoring festivals were frequently associated with fertility, birth, creativity, and growth cycles, as well as gods and goddesses. The mother is the guardian and provider for children and, by extension, for all people. In honor of Cybele, the Great Mother of the Gods, the Phrygians celebrated. Also revered by the Greeks and Romans was the mother figure of their respective gods. Even today, the goddess Durga is honored during Durga-puja, a significant Indian festival.

  • Sunday of Mothering

Europeans honored their mothers on Mothering (or Simnel) Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, long before Americans observed Mother's Day. On the fourth Sunday of Lent, workers, apprentices, and servants—mostly girls who had left to work as domestic servants—were granted a holiday to visit their mothers and the "mother" church throughout the Middle Ages.

During family get-togethers, sons and daughters took on all domestic responsibilities and prepared a special meal in their mother's honor. The mother would go to special church services with her family at some point during the day. That day, there were exceptions to the Lenten fasting regulations. (The day's gospel frequently focused on Jesus feeding the multitude with loaves of food.)

  • The Simnel Cake

A "Mothering Cake" or "Simnel Cake," brought by the oldest son or daughter, was cut and shared by the whole family in 16th-century England. A dried fruit cake with two layers of almond paste is called a Simnel Cake. Eleven marzipan frosting balls, symbolizing the eleven disciples, were placed on top of the cake. (This excludes Judas.) Sugar violets were traditionally added as well. View a classic Simnel Cake recipe here.
