1 | Take Them Out by Hand

Although dandelions can be manually removed, this won't get rid of them entirely because wind-borne seeds can produce new weeds.

Make sure to remove the entire plant if you decide to use this method. Like carrots, dandelions have a deep tap root that stores nutrition; if the root is removed, the weed may regrow.

With the help of a dandelion weeding tool, which has a long metal shaft and a forked end, you can completely remove the weed while digging deep into the ground.

2 | Use White Vinegar Spray

Vinegar is a natural way to manage dandelions if you'd prefer not use chemicals. By burning the leaves, it makes the weed attempt to grow again. The dandelion will eventually run out of food from the taproot after multiple applications.

But watch out—vinegar can also damage healthy grass. Try to avoid spraying the surrounding lawn and instead target the weed.

TIPS

Compared to chemical herbicides, natural alternatives may not be as effective and may take longer to show benefits. If you are thinking about using pesticides, pick a broadleaf weed management product that is appropriate for the type of grass you have and pay close attention to the application directions.

3 | Add Corn Gluten

While corn gluten meal is ineffective against established weeds, it can aid in preventing dandelions from establishing root. Apply it on a dry day in late March or when the soil temperature reaches about 50°F for optimal effects. Dethatch your lawn and remove any existing dandelions before distributing. Apply a small amount of water to activate the corn gluten meal after applying it.
