Before Cleaning, Ensure You Have the Appropriate Supplies. We Recommend Preparing the Following Items:

  • A dog-specific ear cleaner
  • Moist cotton balls or pads
  • A towel
  • Treats
  • An extra pair of hands (if your dog does not stay still)

Avoid using cotton swabs when cleaning your dog’s ears: They can push debris further into the ear canal. We also advises against using hydrogen peroxide as an ear cleaner, as it can irritate healthy skin cells. Use only veterinarian-approved products specifically designed for dog ears.

1. Apply the Ear Cleaner

Hold the ear cleaner between your fingers to properly see the ear canal, depending on your dog's ear type. Wiping the entrance with a cloth to remove excess dirt and wax before applying the cleaner. Then, gently place the tip of the cleaner bottle above your dog's ear. If your dog does not allow the solution to be dripped directly into the ear, you can moisten a cotton ball with the cleaner and insert it into the ear canal.

2. Massage the Ear

After applying the cleaner, massage the base of your dog’s ear for about 30 seconds. If you hear a squishing sound, this indicates that the product is loosening any buildup or debris. Once done, allow your dog to shake its head. Place a towel nearby to manage the mess.

3. Wipe the Ear Canal

Use a moist cotton ball or gauze to wipe away any remaining dirt and debris. Insert the tool only as far as your fingers can comfortably reach. This will be about one joint deep, starting from the outer part of the ear flap.

Be sure to dry your dog's head and reward them with treats.
